Tick, tock | Part II

Blair to stand down if aide charged; so says The Guardian: -

Tony Blair is likely to stand down early if charges are brought in the cash-for-honours affair against any of his key aides, including Ruth Turner, arrested on Friday on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.
Ministers said they were certain Mr Blair would not seek to stay until his planned departure date of June or July if any of his immediate entourage were charged.

One senior Labour minister told the Guardian: "He knows he would need to do the right thing for the party."

Don't let the door of Number 10 hit you on the arse on the way out, Tony.

You seem have become very anti-Blair lately. Typical Labour member, can't support their own leader.

Do you think Cameron will be better?

Mr. Z

Wasn't it you who criticised an essay of mine on NBP that demanded he leave over a year ago? I'm not a Labour member - haven't been for almost a year.

Haven't I always opposed Iraq? Am I not entitled to enjoy the departure of one of the instigators of this war and someone who, and this is the truly unforgivable act, has sold our troops so short?

I understand what Blair has done for the party, I wrote glowingly about him at conference, but his time has passed. His continued leadership is doing Labour and the country a disservice. I don’t fancy a Brown premiership, and I think Cameron is a charlatan, but that does not excuse Blair of the fact he has worn out his welcome.

Tyger : The way you handle hustlers and hecklers is quite a gift that you have. mean that.
Ever thought of going into politics?

Mr Z isn't a heckler (maybe he's a hustler, in fact, he just may be).

Me and Mr.Z go back a fair bit. He is allowed certain leeway.

Me, Politics? Nah. I'm a writer, not a liar.

[...] I have come in for a bit of criticism for having a go at Blair and the state of the current government. It seems, as someone who is a Labour blogger, I am disallowed from giving a critical appraisal of the incumbent Labour Government. “Typical Labour supporter,” is a dismissive slight I have heard many times. Personally I think this is nonsense. [...]

Hustler? Please, as someone who can't abide the tribalism of political parties, I enjoy poking a mocking finger at those who sign up.

On the issue of Blair, of course it's time for him to go, but go with dignity. Let him do his ten years and go out without it looking like he was pushed. He deserves that.

Iraq was a mistake, but I am convinced that Blair made this mistake with best intentions, and to a large extent, selflessly. Okay he was wrong, but he wasn't evil (like Bush, say).

Brown won't last long, he's too associated with Blair. Cameron is a charlatan, but it's time for a change from Labour and he's the only other sensible offer on the table. Likely he'll win with a narrow margin and be quite average.
